As a small child an aunt carries him in her arms to Rome, and later she nurses him through a long illness; he complains of shortness of breath, suspirium, all his life. With her he is probably also in Egypt, where her husband is prefect for sixteen years. In AD 41 Claudius banishes him to Corsica for alleged adultery with Julia Livilla, a pretext in a power struggle at court, and Seneca finds the island bare, steep and inhospitable. In 49 Agrippina recalls him to teach her son Nero, and he becomes one of the most powerful and richest men in Rome. In 65 Nero orders him to kill himself."

He comes from Aquinum in Volscian country, where a (now lost) inscription honours a relative as the town's benefactor, and he lives in Rome as the client of rich patrons, just as he describes it in the satires. The ancient Lives say that an emperor banished him to Egypt for a few lines about an actor; whether that is true is disputed, and Peter Green thinks an exile from 93 to 96 likely. Egypt he certainly knows, and he loathes the Egyptians with passion. He is still alive after AD 127."
